I am sorry, but I need to tell you that my mum who is in in Hong Kong right now also saw this Black Friday Violent news from local TV news. She even called and asked me whether I involved with any violence on Saturday morning. I understand how disturbing you feel when you see such news get global coverage. I feel annoyed and disturbed when I see foreign media covering Chinese news from a biased point of view and an incorrect way.
I find in disheartening, but I am not at all surprised. This is a good example of the agenda-setting capacity of media, social media included. “News” that goes viral typically offers no intrinsic value to the audience. Such “news” instead serves as a distraction from other, more relevant information. The beauty about things like Twitter and RSS feeds is that they can be customized to the user’s interests and grant the luxury of sorting through the nonsense to get to true value.
