Social media job boards have unlocked opportunities for professionals that they certainly would not have otherwise received. One such example is a woman who was asked to curate a playlist for a large chain of stores, she was offered the job after her playlist was seen on Twitter by a store owner. In a world where internet superstars reign supreme (i.e. Justin Beiber), I'm surprised that the article only found 6 stories. But it's true, these days, social media holds so much power that it is scary to think about. Youtube videos can make normal people international celebrities, a difference of opinion can start a Twitter war, and sending the wrong 140 character message could send the media into a frenzy. In fact, I got my last internship on Craigslist. Social media is definitely changing the way people shape their lives.
ReplyDeleteWhile this site in particular chose to list 6 stories, I am sure there are hundreds, if not thousands, of other people in which social media catapulted them into success or fortune. It would be interesting to hear stories of 6 other people who's careers were ruined by the mistakes they made on social media, whether before or after they started searching for careers. In the world we live in today, it seems like everyones silly decisions of their youth will be archived in the Internet to come out when least expected.
